ABINGDON & WITNEY ART & DESIGN FOUNDATION
INTERVIEWS:
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
You can get the application form for the Foundation Course from Reception at the College or telephone
01235 555 585
We offer a one year course and a two year part time course.
What are we looking for in the interview?
When
you come to interview, we will have the opportunity to meet you and see whether
this Foundation course is right for you. In order to help us, you should bring
with you three things:
1 Your Personal Statement
It is
important that you prepare a Personal Statement to bring with you. This should
set out your interest in art and design, things that interest you in particular
including specific artists and designers, exhibitions you have visited and your
particular enthusiasms. In addition, it might be helpful to hear about your
other interests, for example in films, theatre and novels, as well as any work
experience you have. This statement need be no longer than a single side of A4.
2 A
Reference
Please
ask your Art teacher to write a reference for us which you can bring with you.
If they would prefer to write or email confidentially directly to Emma, the Course Leader, that's
fine. (This may be an employer for mature students).

3 Your Portfolio
We
shall want to see a sample of your work at interview. Fifteen well-selected pieces
is about right. You can bring photographs of large work or three dimensional
pieces such as sculptures, ceramics or product design. We love to see some observational
drawing, especially life drawing if you have had the opportunity to do some. A
couple of sketchbooks will help us to see how you develop your projects. Make
sure your work is neatly mounted and clean. Don't spend a fortune on thick
mounting card or those expensive plastic sleeves.
If
you have any extra work of your own done outside the school, we'd love to see
that too.
Make
sure you have your name, address and phone number on your portfolio.
What will the interview be like?
We
usually ask you to come for either a morning or afternoon. You will be given a
tour of our facilities and an introductory talk explaining the structure of
our course, the role of your tutors, the kind of degree courses you can expect to go on to and
lots of other relevant information. If your interview is in term time, you will
have the chance to meet up with some current Foundation students and get the
lowdown!
Your
interview will be with one of the Foundation tutors and will last about fifteen
minutes. We will ask you some questions about your portfolio and about yourself
- nothing to worry about! You will
have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the course. You
will receive a letter normally with two weeks saying whether you have been offered a
place. If you are studying for your A-levels or other qualifications, we'll let you know any conditions
you may have to meet in terms of grades. We may be able to let mature applicants know at the interview itself whether we can offer you a place.
We
take great pride in our Foundation Course and our students. Last year they
gained an amazing 40% Distinction rate! We want to recruit highly motivated
students and expect your full commitment if you come to study with us. We have
a dedicated team of specialist art and design staff with many years experience
in helping students progress on to the right degree courses at the best
universities. Above all, we want
our students to have a fantastic year consolidating their interest and skills,
making new friends and feeling fulfilled. We look forward to meeting you at
interview!
